ef1932a4 14All about this Release!
815d9ba0 16
ef1932a4 17This is the first release of our new 1.4.x-series which is officially
18labeled STABLE! We've been through a long development trajectory
19which has resulted in this version. The big plusses of 1.4 over the
20previous 1.2.x series are enhanced stability, better compatibility
21with a wide range of mail/websystems, more features and less bugs.
22See the Major Updates section of this file for more.

f11c804f 25A note on PHP 4.3.x
28While the developers realize that PHP 4.3.x is the "latest and greatest"
29version of PHP to be available, SquirrelMail has not been extensively
e9c378fe 30tested with it. We currently believe that SquirrelMail should work on
31PHP 4.3.x but we lack the experience with this new version to be
32absolutely sure. If you want to be safe, or experience problems, you may
33want to downgrade to PHP 4.2.x.

3eb34ffd 36Major updates
ef1932a4 39The 1.4.0 series (as a result of 1.3 developent series) brings:
3eb34ffd 40
76911253 41* A complete rewrite of the way we send mail (Deliver-class),
42 and of the way we parse mail (MIME-bodystructure parsing).
43 This makes SquirrelMail more reliable and more efficient
44 at the same time!
45* Support for IMAP UID which makes SquirrelMail more reliable.
ef1932a4 46* Optimizations to code and the number of IMAP calls; SquirrelMail
47 is now a very scalable webmail solution.
76911253 48* Support for a wider range of authentication mechanisms.
ef1932a4 49* Lots of bugfixes, some new features and a couple of UI-tweaks.

a23d0264 52A note on plugins
534a34a2 55There have been major plugin architecture improvements. Lots of plugins
a23d0264 56have not yet been adapted to this. Plugins which are distributed with
ef1932a4 57this release (eg. in the same .tar.gz file) should work. Plugin authors
58will need some time to adapt their plugins, so quite some plugins
59might not work.
a23d0264 60
61So if you have ANY problem at all, first try turning off all plugins.
ef1932a4 62If one plugin seems to be the culprit, contact the author to see if
63a 1.4.x version is underway.

76911253 66Reporting my favorite SquirrelMail 1.4 bug
a23d0264 67==========================================
ef1932a4 69We constantly aim to make SquirrelMail even better. So we need you to
70submit any bug you come across! Also, please mention that the bug is
71in this 1.4.0 release, and list your IMAP server and webserver details.

534a34a2 75Thanks for your cooperation with this. That helps us to make
76sure nothing slips through the cracks. Also, it would help if
a67a0f59 77people would check existing tracker items for a bug before reporting
78it again. This would help to eliminate duplicate reports, and
79increase the time we can spend CODING by DECREASING the time we
80spend sorting through bug reports. And remember, check not only OPEN
81bug reports, but also closed ones as a bug that you report MAY have
82been fixed in CVS already.
534a34a2 84If you want to join us in coding SquirrelMail, or have other
a23d0264 85things to share with the developers, join the development mailinglist:
