In FY17, fifteen devices from Technoethical became RYF certified: six laptops, two docking stations, a mainboard, three WiFi USB adapters, two internal WiFI devices, and a Bluetooth USB adapter. RYF certification was also awarded to three devices from Vikings: a USB stereo sound adapter, a mainboard, and a laptop, bringing the number of RYF certified devices to twenty-seven.

-
Fighting DRM wherever it's found

+
Fighting DRM wherever it's found

In the past year, we've fought back against Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) on multiple fronts.
International Day Against DRM

On July 9, 2017, International Day Against DRM (IDAD) focused on Web-based community involvement, with more than twenty organizations raising their voices in support of a world without DRM. From blog posts to special sales, to parties and movie showings around the world, people came out to celebrate DRM-free media, and raise awareness of the threats we face from DRM.

-
DMCA exemptions

+
DMCA exemptions

The licensing team continued to raise the alarm about legislative issues like the US federal government's continued insistence on forcing supporters of user freedom to fight for exemptions to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act's (DMCA) anti-circumvention restrictions.

The DMCA is a particularly egregious example of legislative endorsement of DRM. It destroys user freedom, and concentrates control over the production and distribution of digital media, giving DRM peddlers the power to carry out massive digital book burnings and conduct large scale surveillance over people's media viewing habits. Even the process for getting exceptions to the anti-circumvention rules for the purposes of research or use of assistive technologies is draconian, resetting every three years and requiring nonfree JavaScript in order to submit a comment on the process, unless you get special permission to comment in another way.

Along with our own comments, we rallied the free software community to submit their own comments in favor of anti-circumvention exemptions — and passionate critiques of the entire process.

-
EME in Web standards

+
EME in Web standards

Encrypted Media Extensions (EME) is just another way to dress up DRM. The FSF and the free software community organized to oppose a proposal by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to make EME a Web standard. We called and wrote W3C president Tim Berners-Lee, asking him to keep the Web free. While we lost this battle, and EME became a Web standard, we're looking at our options for next steps. We are not giving up hope for a free Web, even if its inventor did.

-
Free people, free net

+
Free people, free net

Internet freedom in the United States found itself on the national stage in 2017. Over the course of the year, Ajit Pai became chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and instigated a war against net neutrality. The FSF joined with dozens of other organizations to raise awareness and organize in support of net neutrality.

+
Infrastructure for free software development and activism

This year, the FSF's tech team made some crucial infrastructure upgrades that improve both the Foundation's daily operations and the GNU Project. The changes included running more services on hardware that is Respects Your Freedom certified, including a Librebooted BIOS and running Trisquel GNU/Linux, proving that complex software projects and modern nonprofit organizations can succeed relying on free software.

The tech team and its volunteers also power LibrePlanet, the annual free software conference. Its livestream and recording infrastructure reduce barriers to access for those who are not able to attend the conference in person. Volunteer-monitored IRC channels for each talk and workshop room increase the opportunity to contribute to the conversation. Recordings are archived on the FSF's GNU MediaGoblin instance shortly after the event. And it's all done with free software!

Additionally, this three-person team runs the GNU shell server, oversees the security of GNU software distribution and infrastructure, and works with volunteers to maintain savannah.gnu.org. They also maintain many services used by staff, volunteers, and the free software community, including the FSF's CiviCRM server, fsf.org, libreplanet.org, defectivebydesign.org, the Free Software Directory, XMPP servers for staff and members, mailing lists, apt mirrors, git repositories, internal wikis, a GNU social server, a Single Sign-On server, email servers, DNS servers, internal site monitoring systems, a Request Tracker instance, and the FSF shop.

-
In FY18, the Lab restarted its Continuing Legal Education

-
In addition to being the steward of the GPL, the FSF holds copyright
-on much of the GNU operating system. The
-licensing team spent the year accepting copyright assignments from
-software developers and corporations, investigating GPL violations,

-
We continued to grow our Respects Your Freedom

-process for endorsing fully free GNU/Linux

-users to find an operating system they can trust. Along with a
-dedicated group of volunteers, we continued to expand and improve the
-Free Software Directory,

-
Finally, we improved and updated our existing published licensing

-published timely articles on

-
Threats to software freedom

-
Over the course of 2018, corporate and government threats to user
-freedom continued to stack up, including the passage, in September, of
-the disastrous European Union (EU) Copyright Directive. Automatic
-tracking technology to detect copyrighted material is a threat to free
-speech, free culture, and free software, since it will automatically
-filter out source code that is legally being used under free software
-licenses. We joined in encouraging EU free software
-supporters
-to contact government officials and spread the word about these
-dangers.

-
We also raised the alarm about the US FISA Amendments Reauthorization
-Act of
-2017,
-which renewed and expanded bulk email surveillance, and urged our
-supporters to resist the passage of the CLASSICS
-Act,
-a bill that will consolidate and decrease access to music recordings
-online, and which will further entrench Digital Restrictions
-Management (DRM) on the Internet.

-
Defending net neutrality

-
In late November, 2017, US Federal Communications Commission (FCC)
-chairman Ajit Pai unveiled plans to repeal net
-neutrality. The
-FSF was part of a protest to defend net neutrality at the Verizon
-store in Boston on December 7, and we encouraged our US audience to
-call their congressional representatives. However, Pai's plan, which
-would enable Internet Service Providers to control your access to the
-Internet, was officially codified in February, 2018, with rules taking
-effect in 2018. We
-supported
-the legislative action under the Congressional Review Act (CRA) to
-reverse the repeal, and a motion to restore net neutrality passed in
-May 2018. Various states, including California, Maine, and New York,
-have ongoing legal and legislative efforts to restore net neutrality.

-

-
LibrePlanet conference celebrates its tenth anniversary

-
The tenth annual LibrePlanet was held
-at MIT’s Stata Center on March 24-25, 2018. The theme of the
-conference was “Freedom Embedded”: proprietary software’s sinister
-aspects are embedded in our software and digital devices, while
-freedom is embedded and intrinsic in free software.

-
Keynote speakers at the conference were FSF board member Benjamin Mako
-Hill; Electronic Frontier Foundation senior staff technologist Seth
-David Schoen; free software activist Deb Nicholson; and FSF founder
-and president Richard Stallman. At Stallman’s traditional Saturday
-evening keynote, he awarded the 2017 Free Software Awards to Public
-Lab and to Software Freedom Conservancy executive director Karen
-Sandler.

-
Some progress on DMCA, but not enough

-
In December 2017, we submitted
-comments
-in support of every proposed exemption to the Digital Millennium
-Copyright Act’s
-(DMCA’s)
-anti-circumvention provisions. The DMCA creates draconian legal
-penalties for any attempt to try and take back the control that DRM
-seizes on your software. It violates your legitimate rights to use
-copyrighted works, and criminalizes the sharing of tools and
-information that you can use to take back that control.

-
Some small victories were won in this round: nine of the twelve newly
-proposed classes of exemption were adopted or
-expanded,
-the process for supporting existing exemptions was simplified, and all
-preexisting exemptions were renewed. The US Copyright Office also
-explicitly denounced other governmental agencies trying to use DRM to
-restrict users based on regulations having nothing to do with
-copyright. Nevertheless, our goal continues to be to end
-DRM, period.

-
International Day Against DRM

-
As part of our ongoing campaign against DRM, the FSF raised the call
-on September 18,
-2018
-for supporters to send a message to the world: DRM is just wrong, and
-we can live in a society without it.

-
Hundreds of activists participated by sharing their opposition online
-to how DRM restricts our freedom as a user of software and media, and
-seventeen organizations participated, including April, Creative
-Commons, The Document Foundation, the Electronic Frontier Foundation,
-and more. Here in Boston, we visited the Apple Store and talked with
-shoppers about their digital rights and how Apple devices abuse those
-rights using DRM.

-
The new server cluster Gnuhope started to host critical servers,
-starting with my.fsf.org and
-mirror.fsf.org, to later host all critical
-services. It was later expanded and upgraded with a third redundant
-data storage server, a new network design, and an improved
-firewall. In the process, the team decommissioned our largest legacy
-server hosting critical services, pyxis.fsf.org.

-
The team also noticed a misconfiguration that allowed some personal
-information to be accessible at
-defectivebydesign.org. The team
-promptly took action to correct the problem, inform anyone affected,
-and publish a transparency report on the problem. During the 2018
-period, a big effort was made to renew the deployment and automated
-system using Ansible, to help prevent similar situations in the
-future.

-
Special effort was made to keep up with CPU-level vulnerabilities
-discovered during the fiscal year, such as Meltdown and Spectre, which
-led to some software updates, configuration changes, and a all-new
-method for managing cryptocurrency wallets for the foundation.

-
The main infrastructure firewalls were redesigned with a much more
-strict set of policies, including blocking all unexpected outgoing
-traffic.
