- <p>An overview of the SAFE Internet and how the built-in cryptocurrency ecosystem sustains its decentralized structure and the development of free software. The SAFE Network will replace dependence on servers for secure storage and computation with a decentralized, autonomous network of individuals providing these resources. The network also provides a means for developers to focus on building resourceful applications for the network without dependence on raising capital or serving advertisements.</p>

Almost a decade in the making, this network comes with many features focused on privacy, security and freedom for all users. A built-in cryptocurrency creates an ecosystem which not only sustains its decentralized structure and the development of applications but also will enable a digital economy which has never been able to exist before. Imagine what it would have been like if the World Wide Web launched with a built-in cryptocurrency and what effects that would have on digital ownership. This session will give a brief technical overview of the network and an understanding of the underlying ecosystem.</p>
<p>We can finally realize what a completely freed and distributed Internet looks like, and the innovation and equality it enables.</p>

<h3 id="kurdali">Bassam Kurdali, Urchin</h3>
<p>Bassam is a 3D animator/filmmaker whose 2006 short, Elephants Dream, was the first "open movie." It established the viability of libre tools in a production environment and set precedent by offering its source data under a permissive license for learning, remixing and re-use. His character, ManCandy, began as an easily animatable test bed for rigging experiments. Multiple iterations have been released to the public, and Bassam demonstrates him in the animated tutorial video + short, The ManCandy FAQ. Under the sign of the urchin, Bassam is continuing to pursue a model of production that invests in commonwealth. He teaches, writes and lectures around the world on free production and free software technique. Raised in Damascus, Bassam trained in the United States as an electrical and software engineer.</p>

<h3 id="peterson">Paige Peterson, MaidSafe</h3>
- <p>Paige believes that technology and society have a lot to gain from watching and understanding natural systems. In building infrastructure based on the decentralized and autonomous themes found in nature, we inherently find more sustainable models and processes. She is excited about the future with a private, secure and free Internet.</p>
+ <p>Paige currently works out of San Francisco for MaidSafe doing Web development and US communication management and co-organizes bi-monthly events for one of the largest bitcoin meetups in the world. She previously worked for Open Garden doing community management and graduated from MassArt with an MFA in the Studio for Interrelated Media (SIM) program in '10. She believes that by understanding the evolution of natural systems, we can build more sustainable and secure technologies.</p>
