### Threats to software freedom
Over the course of 2018, corporate and government threats to user
dangers.

+## Licensing and Compliance
+
+The FSF's [Licensing and Compliance
+Lab](https://www.fsf.org/licensing/) defends free software through
+license enforcement and enforcement support, certification and
+endorsement programs, and educational resources.
+
+In FY19, the Lab hired a new staff member, Craig Topham, as copyright
+& licensing associate and guided one intern, Jake Glass. We hosted our
+first Continuing Legal Education (CLE) seminar since 2014, at Berkeley
+Law.
+
+In addition to being the steward of the GPL, the FSF holds copyright
+on much of the [GNU operating system](https://www.gnu.org/). The
+licensing team spent the year accepting copyright assignments from
+software developers and corporations, investigating GPL violations,
+and answering licensing questions from the community.
+
+In continuing our Respects Your Freedom program, we certified a
+mainboard and workstation from Vikings, and thirteen peripheral
+devices and a router from ThinkPenguin, bringing the total number of
+certified devices to forty-six. We have been working with the tech
+team to launch a new version of the RYF website. The current page
+simply lists each certification chronologically. The new site enables
+users to browse and search by categories and retailers.

+The FSF campaigns team identifies important opportunities for free
+software adoption, education, and development, empowers people against
+specific threats to their freedom, and implements strategies to move
+us closer to a free society. This year welcomed two new members to the
+campaigns team, Greg Farough and Zoë Kooyman.

+#### Community meetings:
+
+We had two community meetups:
+
+ * **Bellingham, Washington, on Saturday, April 27:** This event was
+ timed to welcome attendees of the LFNW conference, which was in
+ Bellingham that week. 32 people RSVP'd, and around 20 people were
+ at the venue at any one time. We also received a $250 donation on
+ site. Hosted by John Sullivan and Donald Robertson.
+
+ * **Portland, Oregon, on Thursday, July 18:** This event was timed
+ to welcome attendees of the Oscon conference, which was in
+ Portland that week. We received only a few RSVPs, but around ten
+ people showed up. Hosted by Donald Robertson and Craig
+ Thompson. Bradley Kuhn, and Joshua Gay were also present to field
+ any questions from free software supporters.
+
+Efforts have begun to create more local community
+activities. Currently, campaigns manager Greg Farough and licensing
+and compliance associate Craig Topham are scheduled to do a
+presentation at the Artisan's Asylum makerspace in Somerville,
+Massachusetts, on September 12.
+
+#### High Priority Projects:
+
+The High Priority Projects list (HPP) is getting a fresh start. We are
+working on building a new timeline for the annual review, which will
+likely be in August every year, with a half-yearly review point
+coinciding with the LibrePlanet conference. In the meantime, we have
+identified steps to be taken, most importantly:
+

+### LibrePlanet
+
+LibrePlanet 2019's theme was "Trailblazing Free Software." In 1983,
+the free software movement was born with the announcement of the GNU
+Project. Free software contrasts from nonfree software in that it
+emphasizes a community-oriented philosophy of sharing code freely,
+enabling people to understand how the programs they used worked, to
+build off of each other's code, to pay it forward by sharing their own
+code, and to create useful software that treated users fairly.
+
+During the conference, Free Software Award winners OpenStreetMap and
+Deb Nicholson both shared their work talking about "OpenStreetMap"
+mapping developments and the free software community challenges we
+face in "Free software/utopia,"respectively.
+
+### International Day Against DRM
+
+For IDAD 2019, themed "Right to read," we called on Pearson and other
+similar companies to stop putting a lock on our learning, and
+demonstrate their alleged commitment to education by dropping DRM from
+their electronic textbooks and course materials. At the same time, we
+showed that a better world is possible by encouraging people to
+contribute to collaborative and DRM-free textbooks, and resist the
+stranglehold these publishers put on something as fundamental as one's
+education. The Defective by Design (DbD) coalition organized local and
+remote hackathons on free culture educational materials and organized
+an in-person protest of Pearson Education on Saturday, October 12th.
+
+We also designed a dust jacket you can slip over any "dead tree" book
+that you are reading to warn others about the looming threat of
+DRM. Whether in school, in a coffee shop, or on the subway, it is an
+easy conversation starter about the insidious nature of DRM. We
+encourage all readers to use them, whether on the latest hardcover
+bestseller or the textbook you use in class (while you still have
+one).
+

+In FY2019, we did this and more:

+* Email server upgrades: GNU Mailman servers at lists.fsf.org and
+ lists.gnu.org were upgraded
+* New RYF Web site: <https://ryf.fsf.org/>
+* CIVICRM upgrade: We recently upgraded CiviCRM to its latest
+ version. We worked on a script that helps to streamline the process
+ of rebasing our custom patches onto CiviCRM core.
+* We upgraded the diskless machines used by many FSF staff to
+ Trisquel 8. They are now managed by Ansible rather than CFEngine,
+ which makes managing them much easier than before.
+* GDPR compliance: "The main compliance work was done as of the last
+ board report. Since then, we've completed a compliance audit and all
+ outstanding work except finalizing staff policy and data retention
+ changes in CiviCRM."
+* Three interns: Hrishikesh Barman (Ansible configs, etc); Lei Zhao
+ (Pagure & GitLab); and Valessio Brito (LibreBoot twenty-five
+ laptops)

+## Licensing and Compliance
+
+The FSF's [Licensing and Compliance
+Lab](https://www.fsf.org/licensing/) defends free software through
+license enforcement and enforcement support, certification and
+endorsement programs, and educational resources.
+
+In FY2020, we hosted another CLE in October of 2019 in Raleigh, North
+Carolina, following up on our previous CLE in 2018 in California.
+
+In addition to being the steward of the GPL, the FSF holds copyright
+on much of the [GNU operating system](https://www.gnu.org/). The
+licensing team spent the year accepting copyright assignments from
+software developers and corporations, investigating GPL violations,
+and answering licensing questions from the community.
+
+Copyright & licensing associate Craig Topham ecorded his first oggcast
+with the [FLOSS for science
+podcast](https://flossforscience.com/about/) out of Louisiana State
+University. It is available on the [FLOSS for science Web
+site](https://flossforscience.com/podcast/season3-epsiode-5).
+
+Finally, we updated our materials for our CLE seminars, making them
+more accessible as an ongoing resource. We also updated an entry on
+trade secrets in the GPL FAQ, as well as updates for other resources

+
+#### New videos
+
+The campaigns team released two new videos to help educate the public

+### Special events
+
+In addition to our annual LibrePlanet conference, we celebrated the
+[FSF's
+thirty-fifth](https://www.fsf.org/bulletin/2020/fall/fsf-at-35-why-free-software-matters-more-than-ever)
+anniversary online. Videos from the event are available on our [media
+archive site](https://media.libreplanet.org/u/libreplanet/tag/fsf35/).
+
+#### Community engagements
+
+Zoë, John Hsieh, and John Sullivan joined a community meeting for the
+"FOSS Responders" working group. Due to the coronavirus and the FSF
+staff being out of office, the campaigns team did not host any other
+community meetings or usergroup meetups.
+
+During the spring fundraiser the Working Together for Free Software
+["Meet the Community"
+pages](https://www.fsf.org/working-together/profiles/) were updated
+with seven new interviews with prominent community members.
+
+We worked with Framasoft to set up a Peertube account. The Framasoft
+collective is the developer of Peertube, and the FSF is the only
+account on their personal server, chosen because of their respect for
+our commitment to free software.
+

+### LibrePlanet 2020: Free the Future
+
+#### LP2020 tech updates and pandemic response
+
+The tech team switched gears a week before the conference to make an
+entirely digital conference. The methods originally used in the past
+to host remote speakers were reused to be able to host multiple remote
+speakers and slides while separately recording and streaming to a
+large audience. The system, which combines Jitsi Meet, IceCast2 and
+GStreamer custom scripts, was also documented and used as inspiration
+for other organizations that also moved to host online conferences
+this year.
+
+For the first time, we published an audio-only version of the talks
+from LibrePlanet 2020 to MediaGoblin.
+
+During the event, special attention was needed to mitigate an ongoing
+distributed denial-of service (DDoS) attack, which required taking
+multiple firewall and network routing countermeasures.
+
+We secured funding through the NLnet Foundation to start a project to
+develop a browser extension that can limit the functionality of the
+JavaScript engine, so potentially dangerous operations are disabled or
+altered so the user can run unknown scripts in a safer way. This is
+intended as a companion for LibreJS, as harmful scripts can exist
+regardless of their license. After securing funding, a similar project
+was found, and we are currently getting in contact with their authors
+to combine efforts; the project will be completed in FY21.
+
+### International Day Against DRM
+
+This year's IDAD saw the campaign targeting Netflix and streaming
+services generally, and like last year we encouraged our community to
+do two things: an action in protest of something we oppose, and asking
+them to participate in a "constructive" way to promote freedom. Last
+year, we paired our protest against Pearson with a hackathon on free
+culture textbooks. This year, we encouraged our community to call
+Netflix customer service and voice their opposition to DRM. Since this
+action was over the phone, we can't gather precise numbers, but we
+know that the Netflix call center we targeted was taken offline as a
+result of the protest, due to high call volume. This is a success for
+which we should be proud.
+
+The second action we asked the community to participate in was a
+session on anti-DRM advocacy over BigBlueButton. We decided to do this
+fairly late in the IDAD planning stage, as until the FSF35 event, we
+didn't have enough experience with BigBlueButton to feel confident in
+including it. However, thanks to the great response we received for
+our FSF35 session, we decided to do one for IDAD as well. This was
+very well-attended for something that was first announced only in a
+later IDAD post. The session peaked at 54 participants from 5
+different countries, several of whom joined Zoë and Greg in the
+audio/video chat to share their experiences and advice campaigning
+against DRM. Due to the positive response, we even let the session
+continue an hour after it was scheduled to end. In general, the
+experience was a great demonstration of how much interest in software
+freedom issues can be generated in informal discussions with the
+community.
+
+Together with ANSOL, a Portuguese free software organization, we also
+encouraged people to document any active DRM legislation or court
+cases on the LibrePlanet wiki. This has helped us get information on
+how pervasive DRM is outside the US and EU, and in particular, we
+received good responses from Brazilian supporters of our campaign.
+
+Eight other organizations outside the FSF participated in this year's
+IDAD. Several of these organizations posted anti-DRM blog posts in
+support of the event. These included [Creative
+Commons](https://creativecommons.org/2020/12/04/were-against-digital-rights-management-heres-why/),
+[Framasoft](https://framablog.org/2020/12/04/pour-un-monde-avec-un-million-de-netflix/),
+and
+[April](https://www.april.org/en/international-day-against-drm-friday-december-4th-2020),
+among others.

+### Infrastructure for free software development and activism
+
+The FSF tech team maintains and improves the infrastructure that runs
+both the Foundation's daily operations and the [GNU
+Project](https://www.gnu.org/), continuing to demonstrate that complex
+software projects and modern nonprofit organizations can succeed and
+thrive using solely free software.
+
+* We improved the LibreJS compatibility with our request tracker and
+ Ikiwiki instances. We plan to do a thorough check of all of our
+ sites with regard to LibreJS compatibility.
+
+* We submitted a grant application to fund an anti-malware in
+ Javascript project.
+
+### Tech team pandemic response and projects
+
+#### Remote communication R&D
+
+* We launched a new video conference service as a member's benefit. A
+ Jitsi Meet server was built and associated with the membership
+ credentials system, with good reception from the public. The changes
+ made to Jitsi Meet improved upong its freedom (LibreJS) and privacy
+ (i.e. removing anti-features and 3rd party services), which were
+ made publicly available.
+
+* Research on video conference sites for education and social use:
+ Test machines were built for the Canvas learning management system
+ and the BigBlueButton video conference platform (integrated with
+ Canvas and a simple management front-end called Greenlight). The
+ machines have been tested and lightly used by the staff, board
+ members and some friend organizations that were surveying options
+ for implementing similar platforms, including FSFE, SEAGL,
+ Agaric.coop (and through them, Boston Public Schools), and the City
+ of Cambridge. These systems were also used to host a panel during
+ the Copyright Society remote conference.
+
+#### Hackers and Hospitals (HaH)
+

+(HaH)](https://libreplanet.org/wiki/HACKERS_and_HOSPITALS) is a list
+of free software, free culture projects, and hackers that helped with
+the COVID-19 pandemic. We wrote

+and gave one talk at the at the [*Flatten The Curve*

+### Infrastructure for free software development and activism
+
+The new server cluster "Gnuhope" started to host critical servers,
+starting with [my.fsf.org](https://my.fsf.org/) and
+[mirror.fsf.org](https://mirror.fsf.org/), to later host all critical
+services. It was later expanded and upgraded with a third redundant
+data storage server, a new network design, and an improved
+firewall. In the process, the team decommissioned our largest legacy
+server hosting critical services, "pyxis.fsf.org."
+
+The team also noticed a misconfiguration that allowed some personal
+information to be accessible at
+[defectivebydesign.org](https://www.defectivebydesign.org). The team
+promptly took action to correct the problem, inform anyone affected,
+and publish a transparency report on the problem. During the 2020
+period, a big effort was made to renew the deployment and automated
+system using Ansible, to help prevent similar situations in the
+future.
+
+Special effort was made to keep up with CPU-level vulnerabilities
+discovered during the fiscal year, such as Meltdown and Spectre, which
+led to some software updates, configuration changes, and a all-new
+method for managing cryptocurrency wallets for the Foundation.
+
+The main infrastructure firewalls were redesigned with a much more
+strict set of policies, including blocking all unexpected outgoing
+traffic.

+In 2020, we added a KVM server to our 'gnuhope' stack, which allows us to run more virtual machines in the newer cluster.

+In preparation for
+[GDPR](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Data_Protection_Regulation)
+going into effect on May 25, 2020, the tech team researched their
+response and policy changes by consulting with a pro-bono lawyer. They
+determined that GDPR is only applicable to personal data related to
+donations, FSF mailing lists (not discussion lists), and the [GNU
+Press store](https://shop.fsf.org/). The team decided that they will
+treat everyone as a EU resident for the purpose of privacy policies,
+drafted and applied a new privacy policy, and added links to it from
+all relevant pages and sites.

+whose scope and purpose align with the FSF’s mission. Participating
+projects benefit from the FSF’s nonprofit status, administrative
+infrastructure, and fundraising expertise. These nine projects
+received tens of thousands of dollars in direct support from the free
+software community via the [Working Together for Free Software
+Fund](https://www.fsf.org/working-together/fund).

+<p>The FSF's <a href="https://www.fsf.org/licensing/">Licensing and Compliance
+Lab</a> defends free software through
+license enforcement and enforcement support, certification and
+endorsement programs, and educational resources.</p>
+<p>In FY18, the Lab restarted its <a href="https://www.fsf.org/blogs/licensing/sign-up-for-the-fsfs-next-seminar-on-gpl-enforcement-and-legal-ethics-1">Continuing Legal Education
+seminars</a>
+on the <a href="https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-3.0.en.html">GNU General Public License
+(GPL)</a>. This is the free
+software copyleft license that ensures the user's right to run, study,
+share, and modify software.</p>
+<p>In addition to being the steward of the GPL, the FSF holds copyright
+on much of the <a href="https://www.gnu.org/">GNU operating system</a>. The
+licensing team spent the year accepting copyright assignments from
+software developers and corporations, investigating GPL violations,
+and answering licensing questions from the community.</p>
+<p>We continued to grow our <a href="https://www.fsf.org/resources/hw/endorsement/respects-your-freedom">Respects Your Freedom
+(RYF)</a>
+certification program, which identifies devices that do as much as
+possible to respect user freedom. We also revamped and updated our
+process for endorsing fully free <a href="https://www.gnu.org/distros/">GNU/Linux
+distributions</a>, in order to better help
+users to find an operating system they can trust. Along with a
+dedicated group of volunteers, we continued to expand and improve the
+<a href="https://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Main_Page">Free Software Directory</a>,
+helping nearly two million annual visitors to find individual free
+software packages.</p>
+<p>Finally, we improved and updated our existing published licensing
+materials, adding reviews of new licenses and <a href="https://www.fsf.org/blogs/licensing/?b_start:int=10">answers to common
+questions</a>, and
+published timely <a href="https://www.fsf.org/blogs/licensing">articles</a> on
+current topics and issues in free software licensing.</p>

+possible to respect your freedom and privacy.</p>

+<p>The FSF campaigns team identifies important opportunities for free
+software adoption, education, and development, empowers people against
+specific threats to their freedom, and implements strategies to move
+us closer to a free society.</p>

+<h3 id="threats-to-software-freedom">Threats to software freedom</h3>
+<p>Over the course of 2018, corporate and government threats to user
+freedom continued to stack up, including the passage, in September, of
+the disastrous European Union (EU) Copyright Directive. Automatic
+tracking technology to detect copyrighted material is a threat to free
+speech, free culture, and free software, since it will automatically
+filter out source code that is legally being used under free software
+licenses. We joined in <a href="https://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/take-a-stand-before-july-5th-contact-your-mep-today">encouraging EU free software
+supporters</a>
+to contact government officials and spread the word about these
+dangers.</p>
+<p>We also raised the alarm about the <a href="https://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/undermine-mass-surveillance-with-free-software-and-your-phone-calls">US FISA Amendments Reauthorization
+Act of 2017</a>,
+which renewed and expanded bulk email surveillance, and urged our
+supporters to <a href="https://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/take-action-tell-us-congress-not-to-pass-the-classics-act">resist the passage of the CLASSICS
+Act</a>,
+a bill that will consolidate and decrease access to music recordings
+online, and which will further entrench <a href="https://www.defectivebydesign.org/">Digital Restrictions
+Management (DRM)</a> on the Internet.</p>
+<h3 id="defending-net-neutrality">Defending net neutrality</h3>
+<p>In late November, 2017, US Federal Communications Commission (FCC)
+chairman Ajit Pai unveiled plans to repeal <a href="https://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/take-action-for-net-neutrality">net
+neutrality</a>. The
+FSF was part of a protest to defend net neutrality at the Verizon

+would enable Internet Service Providers to control your access to the
+Internet, was officially codified in February, 2018, with rules taking
+effect in 2018. <a href="https://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/its-not-over-take-action-for-net-neutrality-today">We
+supported</a>
+the legislative action under the <em>Congressional Review Act</em> (CRA) to
+reverse the repeal, and a motion to restore net neutrality passed in
+May 2018. Various states, including California, Maine, and New York,
+have ongoing legal and legislative efforts to restore net neutrality.</p>

+<h3 id="libreplanet-conference-celebrates-its-tenth-anniversary">LibrePlanet conference celebrates its tenth anniversary</h3>
+<p>The <a href="https://libreplanet.org/2018/">tenth annual LibrePlanet</a> was held
+at MIT's Stata Center on March 24-25, 2018. The theme of the
+conference was "Freedom. Embedded." This theme was chosen to
+underscore how proprietary software's sinister aspects are embedded in
+our software and digital devices, while freedom is embedded and
+intrinsic in free software.</p>
+<p>Keynote speakers at the conference were FSF board member Benjamin Mako
+Hill, Electronic Frontier Foundation senior staff technologist Seth
+David Schoen, free software activist Deb Nicholson, and FSF founder
+and president Richard Stallman. At Stallman’s traditional Saturday
+evening keynote, he awarded the 2017 Free Software Awards to Public
+Lab and to Software Freedom Conservancy executive director Karen
+Sandler.</p>
+<h3 id="some-progress-on-dmca-but-not-enough">Some progress on DMCA, but not enough</h3>
+<p>In December 2017, <a href="https://www.defectivebydesign.org/blog/help_fight_against_dmca_anticircumvention_rules_december_15th">we submitted
+comments</a>
+in support of every proposed exemption to the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Millennium_Copyright_Act"><em>Digital Millennium
+Copyright Act's
+(DMCA's</em>)</a>
+anti-circumvention provisions. The DMCA creates draconian legal
+penalties for any attempt to try and take back the control that DRM
+seizes on your software. It violates your legitimate rights to use
+copyrighted works, and criminalizes the sharing of tools and
+information that you can use to take back that control.</p>
+<p>Some small victories were won in this round: nine of the twelve newly
+proposed classes of exemption <a href="https://www.defectivebydesign.org/blog/2018_dmca_anticircumvention_exemption_process_some_progress_not_enough">were adopted or
+expanded</a>,
+the process for supporting existing exemptions was simplified, and all
+preexisting exemptions were renewed. The US Copyright Office also
+explicitly denounced other governmental agencies trying to use DRM to
+restrict users based on regulations having nothing to do with
+copyright. Nevertheless, our goal continues to be <a href="https://www.defectivebydesign.org/">to end
+DRM</a>, period.</p>
+<h3 id="international-day-against-drm">International Day Against DRM</h3>
+<p>As part of our ongoing campaign against DRM, <a href="https://www.defectivebydesign.org/blog/thank_you_participating_international_day_against_drm_2018">the FSF raised the call
+on September 18,
+2018</a>
+for supporters to send a message to the world: DRM is just wrong, and
+we can live in a society without it.</p>
+<p>Hundreds of activists participated by sharing their opposition online
+to how DRM restricts our freedom as a user of software and media, and
+seventeen organizations participated, including April, Creative
+Commons, The Document Foundation, the Electronic Frontier Foundation,
+and more. Here in Boston, we visited the Apple Store and talked with
+shoppers about their digital rights and how Apple devices abuse those
+rights using DRM.</p>

+<p>The FSF tech team maintains and improves the infrastructure that runs
+both the Foundation's daily operations and the <a href="https://www.gnu.org/">GNU
+Project</a>, continuing to demonstrate that complex
+software projects and modern nonprofit organizations can succeed and
+thrive using solely free software.</p>
+<p>Routine annual projects include participation in the yearly
+LibrePlanet conference, for which the tech team provides livestreaming
+and recording infrastructure, and twice-yearly fundraisers, for which
+the tech team prints over 10,000 letters to accompany the mailing of
+the <a href="https://www.fsf.org/bulletin"><em>Free Software Bulletin</em></a>. This
+year, the team also contributed a new modal/popup window to the
+fundraiser, and polished the responsive design of the fundraiser
+banner.</p>

+<h3 id="infrastructure-for-free-software-development-and-activism_1">Infrastructure for free software development and activism</h3>
+<p>The new server cluster "Gnuhope" started to host critical servers,
+starting with <a href="https://my.fsf.org/">my.fsf.org</a> and
+<a href="https://mirror.fsf.org/">mirror.fsf.org</a>, to later host all critical
+services. It was later expanded and upgraded with a third redundant
+data storage server, a new network design, and an improved
+firewall. In the process, the team decommissioned our largest legacy
+server hosting critical services, "pyxis.fsf.org."</p>
+<p>The team also noticed a misconfiguration that allowed some personal
+information to be accessible at
+<a href="https://www.defectivebydesign.org">defectivebydesign.org</a>. The team
+promptly took action to correct the problem, inform anyone affected,
+and publish a transparency report on the problem. During the 2018
+period, a big effort was made to renew the deployment and automated
+system using Ansible, to help prevent similar situations in the
+future.</p>
+<p>Special effort was made to keep up with CPU-level vulnerabilities
+discovered during the fiscal year, such as Meltdown and Spectre, which
+led to some software updates, configuration changes, and a all-new
+method for managing cryptocurrency wallets for the Foundation.</p>
+<p>The main infrastructure firewalls were redesigned with a much more
+strict set of policies, including blocking all unexpected outgoing
+traffic.</p>
+<p>In preparation for
+<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Data_Protection_Regulation">GDPR</a>
+going into effect on May 25, 2018, the tech team researched their
+response and policy changes by consulting with a pro-bono lawyer. They
+determined that GDPR is only applicable to personal data related to
+donations, FSF mailing lists (not discussion lists), and the <a href="https://shop.fsf.org/">GNU
+Press store</a>. The team decided that they will
+treat everyone as a EU resident for the purpose of privacy policies,
+drafted and applied a new privacy policy, and added links to it from
+all relevant pages and sites.</p>

+<p>The FSF's <a href="https://www.fsf.org/licensing/">Licensing and Compliance
+Lab</a> defends free software through
+license enforcement and enforcement support, certification and
+endorsement programs, and educational resources.</p>
+<p>In FY19, the Lab hired a new staff member, Craig Topham, as copyright
+& licensing associate and guided one intern, Jake Glass. We hosted our
+first Continuing Legal Education (CLE) seminar since 2014, at Berkeley
+Law.</p>
+<p>In addition to being the steward of the GPL, the FSF holds copyright
+on much of the <a href="https://www.gnu.org/">GNU operating system</a>. The
+licensing team spent the year accepting copyright assignments from
+software developers and corporations, investigating GPL violations,
+and answering licensing questions from the community.</p>
+<p>In continuing our Respects Your Freedom program, we certified a
+mainboard and workstation from Vikings, and thirteen peripheral
+devices and a router from ThinkPenguin, bringing the total number of
+certified devices to forty-six. We have been working with the tech
+team to launch a new version of the RYF website. The current page
+simply lists each certification chronologically. The new site enables
+users to browse and search by categories and retailers.</p>

+<h3 id="respects-your-freedom-certification">Respects Your Freedom certification</h3>

+<p>The FSF's Respects Your Freedom (RYF) product certification program
+encourages the creation and sale of hardware that will do as much as
+possible to respect your freedom and privacy.</p>
+<p>In FY19, we created a new RYF Web site together with the tech team.</p>
+<p>We also:
+* certified a mainboard and workstation from Vikings, and seven
+ peripheral devices from ThinkPenguin.
+* certified six peripheral devices from ThinkPenguin, as well as a new
+ router from ThinkPenguin, bringing the total number of certified
+ devices to 46.
+* Seven different retailers have gained certification on at least one
+ device at this time.</p>

+<h2 id="campaigns">Campaigns</h2>
+<p>The FSF campaigns team identifies important opportunities for free
+software adoption, education, and development, empowers people against
+specific threats to their freedom, and implements strategies to move
+us closer to a free society. This year welcomed two new members to the
+campaigns team, Greg Farough and Zoë Kooyman.</p>

+<h4 id="community-meetings">Community meetings:</h4>
+<p>We had two community meetups:</p>
+<ul>
+<li>
+<p><strong>Bellingham, Washington, on Saturday, April 27:</strong> This event was
+ timed to welcome attendees of the LFNW conference, which was in
+ Bellingham that week. 32 people RSVP'd, and around 20 people were
+ at the venue at any one time. We also received a $250 donation on
+ site. Hosted by John Sullivan and Donald Robertson.</p>

+<li>
+<p><strong>Portland, Oregon, on Thursday, July 18:</strong> This event was timed
+ to welcome attendees of the Oscon conference, which was in
+ Portland that week. We received only a few RSVPs, but around ten
+ people showed up. Hosted by Donald Robertson and Craig
+ Thompson. Bradley Kuhn, and Joshua Gay were also present to field
+ any questions from free software supporters.</p>

+<p>Efforts have begun to create more local community
+activities. Currently, campaigns manager Greg Farough and licensing
+and compliance associate Craig Topham are scheduled to do a
+presentation at the Artisan's Asylum makerspace in Somerville,
+Massachusetts, on September 12.</p>
+<h4 id="high-priority-projects">High Priority Projects:</h4>
+<p>The High Priority Projects list (HPP) is getting a fresh start. We are
+working on building a new timeline for the annual review, which will
+likely be in August every year, with a half-yearly review point
+coinciding with the LibrePlanet conference. In the meantime, we have
+identified steps to be taken, most importantly:</p>

+<h3 id="libreplanet">LibrePlanet</h3>
+<p>LibrePlanet 2019's theme was "Trailblazing Free Software." In 1983,
+the free software movement was born with the announcement of the GNU
+Project. Free software contrasts from nonfree software in that it
+emphasizes a community-oriented philosophy of sharing code freely,
+enabling people to understand how the programs they used worked, to
+build off of each other's code, to pay it forward by sharing their own
+code, and to create useful software that treated users fairly.</p>
+<p>During the conference, Free Software Award winners OpenStreetMap and
+Deb Nicholson both shared their work talking about "OpenStreetMap"
+mapping developments and the free software community challenges we
+face in "Free software/utopia,"respectively.</p>
+<h3 id="international-day-against-drm">International Day Against DRM</h3>
+<p>For IDAD 2019, themed "Right to read," we called on Pearson and other
+similar companies to stop putting a lock on our learning, and
+demonstrate their alleged commitment to education by dropping DRM from
+their electronic textbooks and course materials. At the same time, we
+showed that a better world is possible by encouraging people to
+contribute to collaborative and DRM-free textbooks, and resist the
+stranglehold these publishers put on something as fundamental as one's
+education. The Defective by Design (DbD) coalition organized local and
+remote hackathons on free culture educational materials and organized
+an in-person protest of Pearson Education on Saturday, October 12th.</p>
+<p>We also designed a dust jacket you can slip over any "dead tree" book
+that you are reading to warn others about the looming threat of
+DRM. Whether in school, in a coffee shop, or on the subway, it is an
+easy conversation starter about the insidious nature of DRM. We
+encourage all readers to use them, whether on the latest hardcover
+bestseller or the textbook you use in class (while you still have
+one).</p>
+<p>They have been translated into <a href="https://www.defectivebydesign.org/dayagainstdrm/2019/dust-jacket">ten different languages</a>.</p>

+ lists.gnu.org were upgraded</li>
+<li>New RYF Web site: <https: ryf.fsf.org=""></https:></li>
+<li>CIVICRM upgrade: We recently upgraded CiviCRM to its latest
+ version. We worked on a script that helps to streamline the process
+ of rebasing our custom patches onto CiviCRM core.</li>
+<li>We upgraded the diskless machines used by many FSF staff to
+ Trisquel 8. They are now managed by Ansible rather than CFEngine,
+ which makes managing them much easier than before.</li>
+<li>GDPR compliance: "The main compliance work was done as of the last
+ board report. Since then, we've completed a compliance audit and all
+ outstanding work except finalizing staff policy and data retention
+ changes in CiviCRM."</li>
+<li>Three interns: Hrishikesh Barman (Ansible configs, etc); Lei Zhao
+ (Pagure & GitLab); and Valessio Brito (LibreBoot twenty-five
+ laptops)</li>

+<h2 id="licensing-and-compliance">Licensing and Compliance</h2>
+<p>The FSF's <a href="https://www.fsf.org/licensing/">Licensing and Compliance
+Lab</a> defends free software through
+license enforcement and enforcement support, certification and
+endorsement programs, and educational resources.</p>
+<p>In FY2020, we hosted another CLE in October of 2019 in Raleigh, North
+Carolina, following up on our previous CLE in 2018 in California.</p>
+<p>In addition to being the steward of the GPL, the FSF holds copyright
+on much of the <a href="https://www.gnu.org/">GNU operating system</a>. The
+licensing team spent the year accepting copyright assignments from
+software developers and corporations, investigating GPL violations,
+and answering licensing questions from the community.</p>
+<p>Copyright & licensing associate Craig Topham ecorded his first oggcast
+with the <a href="https://flossforscience.com/about/">FLOSS for science
+podcast</a> out of Louisiana State
+University. It is available on the <a href="https://flossforscience.com/podcast/season3-epsiode-5">FLOSS for science Web
+site</a>.</p>
+<p>Finally, we updated our materials for our CLE seminars, making them
+more accessible as an ongoing resource. We also updated an entry on
+trade secrets in the GPL FAQ, as well as updates for other resources
+such as our license recommendation page.</p>

+<p>The FSF's Respects Your Freedom (RYF) product certification program
+encourages the creation and sale of hardware that will do as much as
+possible to respect your freedom and privacy.</p>
+<p>In FY20, we certified three devices, the Talos II and Talos II lite
+from Raptor Engineering and the Wi-Fri ND2H Wi-Fi card from Libiquity.</p>
+<p>The new RYF Web page launched November 2019. The new site enables
+users to browse and search by categories and retailers, and makes
+finding what they are looking for simpler.</p>

+<h4 id="new-videos">New videos</h4>
+<p>The campaigns team released two new videos to help educate the public
+about free software. One is <a href="https://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/the-university-of-costumed-heroes-a-video-from-the-fsf"><em>The university of costumed
+heroes</em></a>,
+and the other is
+<a href="https://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/presenting-shoetool-happy-holidays-from-the-fsf">Shoetool</a></p>
+<h3 id="special-events">Special events</h3>
+<p>In addition to our annual LibrePlanet conference, we celebrated the
+<a href="https://www.fsf.org/bulletin/2020/fall/fsf-at-35-why-free-software-matters-more-than-ever">FSF's
+thirty-fifth</a>
+anniversary online. Videos from the event are available on our <a href="https://media.libreplanet.org/u/libreplanet/tag/fsf35/">media
+archive site</a>.</p>
+<h4 id="community-engagements">Community engagements</h4>
+<p>Zoë, John Hsieh, and John Sullivan joined a community meeting for the
+"FOSS Responders" working group. Due to the coronavirus and the FSF
+staff being out of office, the campaigns team did not host any other
+community meetings or usergroup meetups.</p>
+<p>During the spring fundraiser the Working Together for Free Software
+<a href="https://www.fsf.org/working-together/profiles/">"Meet the Community"
+pages</a> were updated
+with seven new interviews with prominent community members.</p>
+<p>We worked with Framasoft to set up a Peertube account. The Framasoft
+collective is the developer of Peertube, and the FSF is the only
+account on their personal server, chosen because of their respect for
+our commitment to free software.</p>

+<h3 id="libreplanet-2020-free-the-future">LibrePlanet 2020: Free the Future</h3>
+<h4 id="lp2020-tech-updates-and-pandemic-response">LP2020 tech updates and pandemic response</h4>
+<p>The tech team switched gears a week before the conference to make an
+entirely digital conference. The methods originally used in the past
+to host remote speakers were reused to be able to host multiple remote
+speakers and slides while separately recording and streaming to a
+large audience. The system, which combines Jitsi Meet, IceCast2 and
+GStreamer custom scripts, was also documented and used as inspiration
+for other organizations that also moved to host online conferences
+this year.</p>
+<p>For the first time, we published an audio-only version of the talks
+from LibrePlanet 2020 to MediaGoblin.</p>
+<p>During the event, special attention was needed to mitigate an ongoing
+distributed denial-of service (DDoS) attack, which required taking
+multiple firewall and network routing countermeasures.</p>
+<p>We secured funding through the NLnet Foundation to start a project to
+develop a browser extension that can limit the functionality of the
+JavaScript engine, so potentially dangerous operations are disabled or
+altered so the user can run unknown scripts in a safer way. This is
+intended as a companion for LibreJS, as harmful scripts can exist
+regardless of their license. After securing funding, a similar project
+was found, and we are currently getting in contact with their authors
+to combine efforts; the project will be completed in FY21.</p>
+<h3 id="international-day-against-drm">International Day Against DRM</h3>
+<p>This year's IDAD saw the campaign targeting Netflix and streaming
+services generally, and like last year we encouraged our community to
+do two things: an action in protest of something we oppose, and asking
+them to participate in a "constructive" way to promote freedom. Last
+year, we paired our protest against Pearson with a hackathon on free
+culture textbooks. This year, we encouraged our community to call
+Netflix customer service and voice their opposition to DRM. Since this
+action was over the phone, we can't gather precise numbers, but we
+know that the Netflix call center we targeted was taken offline as a
+result of the protest, due to high call volume. This is a success for
+which we should be proud.</p>
+<p>The second action we asked the community to participate in was a
+session on anti-DRM advocacy over BigBlueButton. We decided to do this
+fairly late in the IDAD planning stage, as until the FSF35 event, we
+didn't have enough experience with BigBlueButton to feel confident in
+including it. However, thanks to the great response we received for
+our FSF35 session, we decided to do one for IDAD as well. This was
+very well-attended for something that was first announced only in a
+later IDAD post. The session peaked at 54 participants from 5
+different countries, several of whom joined Zoë and Greg in the
+audio/video chat to share their experiences and advice campaigning
+against DRM. Due to the positive response, we even let the session
+continue an hour after it was scheduled to end. In general, the
+experience was a great demonstration of how much interest in software
+freedom issues can be generated in informal discussions with the
+community.</p>
+<p>Together with ANSOL, a Portuguese free software organization, we also
+encouraged people to document any active DRM legislation or court
+cases on the LibrePlanet wiki. This has helped us get information on
+how pervasive DRM is outside the US and EU, and in particular, we
+received good responses from Brazilian supporters of our campaign.</p>
+<p>Eight other organizations outside the FSF participated in this year's
+IDAD. Several of these organizations posted anti-DRM blog posts in
+support of the event. These included <a href="https://creativecommons.org/2020/12/04/were-against-digital-rights-management-heres-why/">Creative
+Commons</a>,
+<a href="https://framablog.org/2020/12/04/pour-un-monde-avec-un-million-de-netflix/">Framasoft</a>,
+and
+<a href="https://www.april.org/en/international-day-against-drm-friday-december-4th-2020">April</a>,
+among others.</p>

+<p>The FSF tech team maintains and improves the infrastructure that runs
+both the Foundation's daily operations and the <a href="https://www.gnu.org/">GNU
+Project</a>, continuing to demonstrate that complex
+software projects and modern nonprofit organizations can succeed and
+thrive using solely free software.</p>
+<ul>

+<p>We improved the LibreJS compatibility with our request tracker and
+ Ikiwiki instances. We plan to do a thorough check of all of our
+ sites with regard to LibreJS compatibility.</p>
+</li>

+<p>We submitted a grant application to fund an anti-malware in
+ Javascript project.</p>
+</li>
+</ul>
+<h3 id="tech-team-pandemic-response-and-projects">Tech team pandemic response and projects</h3>
+<h4 id="remote-communication-rd">Remote communication R&D</h4>

+<p>We launched a new video conference service as a member's benefit. A
+ Jitsi Meet server was built and associated with the membership
+ credentials system, with good reception from the public. The changes
+ made to Jitsi Meet improved upong its freedom (LibreJS) and privacy
+ (i.e. removing anti-features and 3rd party services), which were
+ made publicly available.</p>

+<p>Research on video conference sites for education and social use:
+ Test machines were built for the Canvas learning management system
+ and the BigBlueButton video conference platform (integrated with
+ Canvas and a simple management front-end called Greenlight). The
+ machines have been tested and lightly used by the staff, board
+ members and some friend organizations that were surveying options
+ for implementing similar platforms, including FSFE, SEAGL,
+ Agaric.coop (and through them, Boston Public Schools), and the City
+ of Cambridge. These systems were also used to host a panel during
+ the Copyright Society remote conference.</p>

+<h4 id="hackers-and-hospitals-hah">Hackers and Hospitals (HaH)</h4>
+<p><a href="https://libreplanet.org/wiki/HACKERS_and_HOSPITALS">Hackers and Hospitals
+(HaH)</a> is a list
+of free software, free culture projects, and hackers that helped with
+the COVID-19 pandemic. We wrote
+<a href="https://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/hackers-and-hospitals-how-you-can-help">two</a>
+<a href="https://www.fsf.org/bulletin/2020/spring/hackers-and-hospitals">articles</a>
+and gave one talk at the at the <a href="https://media.libreplanet.org/u/libreplanet/m/hackers-and-hospitals/"><em>Flatten The Curve</em>

+<h3 id="infrastructure-for-free-software-development-and-activism_1">Infrastructure for free software development and activism</h3>
+<p>The new server cluster "Gnuhope" started to host critical servers,
+starting with <a href="https://my.fsf.org/">my.fsf.org</a> and
+<a href="https://mirror.fsf.org/">mirror.fsf.org</a>, to later host all critical
+services. It was later expanded and upgraded with a third redundant
+data storage server, a new network design, and an improved
+firewall. In the process, the team decommissioned our largest legacy
+server hosting critical services, "pyxis.fsf.org."</p>
+<p>The team also noticed a misconfiguration that allowed some personal
+information to be accessible at
+<a href="https://www.defectivebydesign.org">defectivebydesign.org</a>. The team
+promptly took action to correct the problem, inform anyone affected,
+and publish a transparency report on the problem. During the 2020
+period, a big effort was made to renew the deployment and automated
+system using Ansible, to help prevent similar situations in the
+future.</p>
+<p>Special effort was made to keep up with CPU-level vulnerabilities
+discovered during the fiscal year, such as Meltdown and Spectre, which
+led to some software updates, configuration changes, and a all-new
+method for managing cryptocurrency wallets for the Foundation.</p>
+<p>The main infrastructure firewalls were redesigned with a much more
+strict set of policies, including blocking all unexpected outgoing
+traffic.</p>

+<p>In preparation for
+<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Data_Protection_Regulation">GDPR</a>
+going into effect on May 25, 2020, the tech team researched their
+response and policy changes by consulting with a pro-bono lawyer. They
+determined that GDPR is only applicable to personal data related to
+donations, FSF mailing lists (not discussion lists), and the <a href="https://shop.fsf.org/">GNU
+Press store</a>. The team decided that they will
+treat everyone as a EU resident for the purpose of privacy policies,
+drafted and applied a new privacy policy, and added links to it from
+all relevant pages and sites.</p>
