142
In your gift giving this year, put freedom first

143
It's time to reclaim our freedom from the abuse of multinational
144 corporations, who
145 use proprietary software and
146 malicious "antifeatures" to keep us powerless, dependent, and
147 surveilled by the devices that we use. There's no time at which it's
148 more important to turn these unfortunate facts into positive action than the holiday
149 season.

150
The gifts that we recommend here might not be making headlines, but
151 they're the rare exception to the apparent rule that devices should
152 mistreat their users. We encourage you to take a close look at our
153 recommendations and see if they might work for you or a loved one.

154
This year, choose freedom

155
To minimize ecological waste and encourage free software adoption, we advise you to end that cycle of forced obsolescence and user exploitation, and opt to try running free software on a device you already own.

156
If you're unlucky enough to get a gift that doesn't respect your freedom, you can still help others avoid it by documenting its ethical pitfalls. And if you're a strongly technical user, this year's Guide also lists devices that need a little help or development to cross the freedom "finish line."

238

239
Our advice: There's currently no cell phone on the market that's fully compatible with user freedom, given the presence of nonfree software in iOS and Android. What makes matters worse is that all smartphones currently run a separate, nonfree OS commonly referred to as the "mobile baseband," which is responsible for most of the device's communications.

240
If you're at all able to, and if you find your hardware is compatible with it, we recommend pairing the Replicant distribution of Android with the F-Droid app repository. Replicant is the bottom line when it comes to mobile OSes that respect their user's freedom, and is a project fiscally sponsored by the FSF.

253 Even if your phone doesn't support Replicant, you can still use the F-Droid repository on your Android phone. F-Droid has hundreds of applications that are ready to install, including Syncthing, Tor, Minetest, and Termux.

263

264 Apple prevents you from installing third-party free software on your own phone, and they use this control to censor apps that compete with or subvert Apple's profits.
